Venice in April: Weather, Tides, Events and Costs

What is the weather like in Venice in April?

Mild by day, cool at night, and wetter than the months before it. Over the 1991 to 2020 reference period the daily maximum averages 16.3 degrees C and the overnight minimum 8.8 degrees C (Open-Meteo, 2026). ISPRA describes the same climb from its Lido station as an average rise of about 4 degrees C a month in mean maximum temperature from February through May (ISPRA, 2026).

The change from March is in the extremes as much as the average. Afternoons below 15 degrees C fall from about 26 in March to about ten in April, about three afternoons reach 20 degrees C or more, and frost is effectively finished, at roughly one freezing night every ten Aprils against about one a year in March.

Station observations run slightly warmer than the reanalysis, because the recording site at Venezia Tessera sits off the water. Across the 623 April days the series covers between 1991 and 2020, the mean maximum is 17.5 degrees C and the mean minimum 9.7 degrees C, with 26.9 degrees C the warmest April afternoon and 0.0 degrees C the coldest April night (Meteostat, 2026).

Rain is the part most visitors underestimate. April averages 82 mm over about ten wet days, against 69 mm over about eight days in March, which makes it the first month of the year to pass ten wet days (Open-Meteo, 2026). The heaviest single April day in the reference period delivered 53.7 mm. Pack for showers rather than for cold.

Does Venice flood in April?

Rarely. Tide heights are measured against the Punta della Salute datum of 1897, and 80 cm above it is the level at which the lowest ground in Piazza San Marco begins to flood (ISPRA, 2026).

Of the 324 tides of 110 cm or more recorded at Venice between 1872 and 2019, eight fell in April. That puts the month seventh, behind November with 108, December with 79, October with 45, February with 36, January with 28 and March with 11 (ISPRA, Comune di Venezia & CNR-ISMAR, 2026). The eight are 147 cm on 16 April 1936, 133 cm on 4 April 2019, 118 cm on 21 April 1967, 116 cm on 27 April 2009, 115 cm on 24 April 1979, 113 cm on 5 April 2000, 112 cm on 11 April 1963 and 111 cm on 2 April 1992. Seven of the eight peaked after 21.00, so an April flood is usually a night event.

The April record of 147 cm on 16 April 1936 is the oldest of the 25 exceptional tides of 140 cm or more listed for 1872 to 2019, and the only April entry among them. Since the MOSE barriers entered service the register carries 57 high water entries for 2020 to 2024, none of them in April.

Mean sea level is a separate matter. In 2025 April carried the largest positive monthly anomaly of the year, about 9 cm above the 2005 to 2024 average for the month (ISPRA, 2026).

When is Easter, and where does April 2027 sit?

Easter moves, and that decides how an April trip feels. Easter Sunday 2026 fell on 5 April, which put Holy Week, Easter and Easter Monday inside the month. Easter Sunday 2027 falls on 28 March, so Holy Week and Easter are over before April begins (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2026).

What is left in April 2027 is the tail of the season. The Octave of Easter runs to Saturday 3 April, and 4 April is the Second Sunday of Easter. Churches keep Easter time through the month, and the Basilica di San Marco follows its normal timetable.

The fixed date that matters is 25 April. It is a public holiday across Italy, listed in article 2 of Law 260 of 27 May 1949 as the anniversary of the liberation (Normattiva, 2026), and in the general liturgical calendar it is the feast of Saint Mark, the patron of Venice, as the 2026 calendar shows for 25 April that year (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2026). In 2027 the date falls on a Sunday, the Fifth Sunday of Easter, which means shops and offices keep holiday hours and the Basilica opens at 14.00 rather than 09.30, with last entry at 16.45 (Procuratoria di San Marco, 2026). Plan that afternoon around the crowd rather than against it.

What is on in Venice in April 2027?

Less than an April visitor might expect, because the two events that fill the city in spring sit on either side of the month.

The Biennale is the bigger absence. The 20th International Architecture Exhibition runs from 8 May to 21 November 2027, with a pre-opening on 6 and 7 May (La Biennale di Venezia, 2026). An April trip therefore falls between exhibitions, with the Giardini and the Arsenale venues closed to the public for the installation period. Anyone travelling for the Biennale should move the dates into May or later.

The Vogalonga, the 30 km rowing event through the lagoon and the Grand Canal, is tied to Pentecost and lands in May as well. Its most recent published edition was 24 May 2026 (Vogalonga, 2026), which was Pentecost Sunday that year (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2026).

The event April does own is Su e Zo per i Ponti, a walk through the city on a course that starts and finishes in Piazza San Marco. The next edition is on 18 April 2027, over a full route of 11.6 km and 44 bridges or a short route of 5.7 km and 24 bridges from the Porto di Venezia (Su e Zo per i Ponti, 2026). It is a participation walk rather than a race, and it puts several thousand people on the bridges of the centre for a morning, which is worth knowing if that Sunday is your only day in the city.

Daylight, the clock and opening hours in April

Central European Summer Time covers the whole of April. Under the rule the European Union has applied since 1981, summer time starts on the last Sunday in March at 01.00 UTC and ends on the last Sunday in October, so every April day in Venice runs on UTC plus two hours (IANA Time Zone Database, 2026).

That buys long evenings. On 1 April 2027 Venice gets 12 hours 50 minutes of daylight, with sunrise at 06.49 and sunset at 19.39 local time. By 30 April it has 14 hours 18 minutes, sunrise at 05.59 and sunset at 20.16, a gain of about 88 minutes across the month (Sunrise-Sunset.org, 2026). Civil twilight adds a further half hour at each end.

The main sites follow the calendar rather than the light. The Doge's Palace switches to its summer timetable on 1 April, open 09.00 to 19.00 with last admission at 18.00, against 09.00 to 18.00 in the winter season that ends on 31 March (Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, 2026). The late Friday and Saturday openings to 23.00 begin on 1 May, so they are outside April. The Basilica di San Marco opens 09.30 to 17.15 from Monday to Saturday, with last entry at 16.45, and at 14.00 on Sundays and holidays (Procuratoria di San Marco, 2026).

What does a visit to Venice in April cost?

April is the month the access fee starts, with more charged days than any other month.

Under the 2026 calendar the charge applied on 60 days, from 3 April to 26 July, between 08.30 and 16.00. Seventeen of those days were in April: the 3rd to the 6th, the 10th to the 12th, the 17th to the 19th, and the 24th to the 30th. May took 15, June 16 and July 12 (Venice Visit Pass, 2026). It is 5.00 EUR for visitors who pay by the fourth day before arrival and 10.00 EUR after that, applies from age 14, and covers the historic centre alone, with Murano, Burano and the Lido excluded. Hotel and bed and breakfast guests are exempt, as are Veneto residents and people working in the old city. No 2027 calendar had been published when this page was written.

Transport does not change with the season. A single 75 minute Rete Unica ticket is 9.50 EUR, the Venezia Daily Pass 25.00 EUR, and multi-day tickets 35.00 EUR for two days, 45.00 EUR for three and 65.00 EUR for seven. A three day Rolling Venice ticket is 27.00 EUR for ages 6 to 29 on a 6.00 EUR card, and the airport supplement is 7.00 EUR one way and 13.00 EUR return (ACTV, 2026).

The St Mark's Square museums ticket covering the Doge's Palace is 35.00 EUR full, 15.00 EUR reduced, or 30.00 EUR online at least thirty days ahead (Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, 2026).

Is April a good time to visit Venice?

For weather and daylight, yes. April gives a 16.3 degrees C average maximum, roughly three afternoons at 20 degrees C or better, almost no frost, and close to 14 hours of daylight by the end of the month (Open-Meteo, 2026; Sunrise-Sunset.org, 2026). Deep flooding is close to its annual minimum, with eight of the 324 recorded tides of 110 cm or more falling in April and no April entry at all in the 2020 to 2024 register (ISPRA, Comune di Venezia & CNR-ISMAR, 2026).

The costs sit on the other side of the ledger. April carries 17 of the 60 access fee days in the 2026 calendar, more than any other month, which is the city's own statement about which days it expects to be crowded (Venice Visit Pass, 2026). Rain is up as well, at 82 mm over about ten wet days against 69 mm over about eight in March (Open-Meteo, 2026).

October makes the useful comparison. It averages 17.8 degrees C by day, a little warmer than April, but it holds 45 of those 324 high tides against April's eight. April trades the risk of wet feet for the certainty of company and a charge at the gate. If the aim is a mild city with dry ground underfoot, April is one of the two best months of the year for it, and the first half, before the 25 April holiday, is the quieter half.
